Tortona was once named Derthona, it is an industrial town located on the slopes of Ligurian Appenines, in the Province of Alessandria.
It is an historical city set on the shores of the Scrivia torrent, at the edges of the plain by the feet of the first Tortona hills that slope down in the valley.
The city has always been an important node of communication, already connected with important roads in the Roman age and today, for the highway junctions, Tortona is an ideal point to visit the lowland of Scrivia and the hillside zones.
There are interesting works to see in Tortona as the 16th Century panoramic Tower and the Gotic Guidobono Palace, today the seat of the Civic Museum that it has collection of roman foundings in the zone and medieval and modern art pieces.
Among the religious monuments there is the most ancient church of Tortona which is entitled to Santa Maria Canale with its Romanesque facade, the Holy Cross oratory, the 14th Century church of San Matteo, the Episcopal Palace and the Cathedral, while to the city margins there is the modern Sanctuary della Guardia, erected by Don Orione.
Tortona is renown to be the birthplace of Lorenzo Perosi and the house where the great musician was born is set in the omunimous via entitled to him.
'La Festa dell'Uva' or the festivity of the grape, is one of the most important manifestation taking place in Tortona that it is recalled to the valuable Tortonesi DOC wines and the city proposes an optimal catering and good hotel lodging facilities.
