Castrovillari is a small town of the Calabrian inland, near the border with Basilicata. The locality lies in the fertile valley of Coscile, at the foot of mount Pollino. The city is set roughly halfway between the Ionian Sea, which is 30 km distant, and the Tyrrhenian Sea, a little less than 50 km. This area is characterized by a typical Mediterranean climate in summer, while in winter becomes Apennines. Castrovillari is the main center of the Pollino National Park, the biggest in Italy by extension, set up to protect a landscape still untouched.
Castrovillari is divided in two parts by the famous Ponte della catena. The modern one, post lower, houses shops and offices overlooking the main way, Corso Cavour. The ancient one, of medieval origin, is situated on a rocky spur and is characterized by narrow streets and small houses. The city has a relatively recent history, in fact it was founded by the Aragonese in the fifteenth century. In the historical center there is the castle, with a square base and cylindrical towers on the sides. The building was completed in 1490 even though the original nucleus dates back to the Norman period.
Nearby lies the imposing shrine of Santa Maria del Castello, which was built in 1090 on the site of the discovery of a sacred image. The facade, with a large porch, has two beautiful arched windows. Inside there is a precious Byzantine frescoes, depicting a Madonna and child. With its beautiful landscapes and its mild climate, Castrovillari is the ideal place to spend a pleasant vacation and relax. In the park you can take a walk immersed in the nature or do sports like mountain climbing and rafting.
