Assisi is nestled on the slopes of mount Subasio overlooking the plain formed by the Topino and Chiascio rivers, in the green Umbria Valley.

The city is one of the main Italian tourist destinations and Assisi is also rich in monuments and endowed with art, such as the Basilica of St. Francis, which it is not only a cornerstone of world religious devotion.
In town you can also pay a visit to the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Rufino, the Temple of Minerva, a perfectly preserved Roman temple and on the main square there are two imposing palaces: Palazzo dei Priori and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo with its Civic Tower.
Outside the city walls it stands the superb Rocca Maggiore, a fortress dominating over the town and there are many places that you can visit in the immediate vicinity of Assisi which are connected with St. Francis life, such as the Carceri Hermitage, set on the slopes of the mountain, the Convent of San Damiano, the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli which was built to protect the Porziuncola, the tiny church that welcomed the first community of Franciscans, and the Chapel of the Transito, where St. Francis died.
