The Argentario region is set in the south of Tuscany amid the blue limpid waters of the Tyrrhenian sea and the greenery of the olive groves, close by to the Morellino di Scansano vineyards, in the typical Maremma landscape.
The peninsula of the Argentario Mount is connected to the mainland through the 'tombolo' of Feniglia and Giannella, in the Lagoon of Orbetello. From both dividing bridges of the lagoon it is possible to admire many species of the rarest birds, as the grey heron, the rose flamingo, the fidh-hawk and the white stork.
The city of Orbetello was most probably an Etruscan takeover, in the VIII century b.C., the walls onto the sea must have been built up by the Etruschi.
Under the domination of the Aldobrandeschi and Orsini noble families, Orbetello was later conquered from Siena and then iIt came then occupied from the Spanish, between the XVI and XVII century. They built up here also the Guzman fortress, which it hosts nowadays hte Archaeological Museum.
Monte Argentario was originally an island of the Tuscan archipelago that subsequently came connected through the 2 'tomboli' to Orbetello, becoming therefore a peninsula. Through the 'tomboli' north of the peninsula one get to Porto Santo Stefano, situated on the northern side. A fishermen village founded in the XV century from some sailors of Genoa that shipwrecked in that area. Nowadays Porto Santo Stefano is an 'élite' resort holiday with villas of famous personages situated on the reefs outside of the village and prestigious yachts that berth in the characteristic port.
From Porto Santo Stefano leave the connections towards the islands of Giglio and Giannutri.
On the southern part of the Argentario Mount is set Porto Ercole, a renown tourist small city of international appeal, also a preferred destinaton for famous personages.
