Lucca is situated on the left bank of Serchio river, in the centre of a fertile plain and it is an extraordinary art city to discover, sheltered by medieval city walls.
Nowadays city walls were intentionally erected by the Medici family, they have a length of about 4 km and entirely encircle the historical center which has 99 churches. The name of Lucca derives from the celtic-ligurian word "luk" and it means swamp place. In the past it was a Ligurian village until Etruscan age, then followed the Romans and in 89 a.C. they attributed to the city the town municipal rights. After the roman empire fall, Gothic and Longobard undertook and named it the Tuscia capital city. When the Via Francigena was open, connecting Rome to North Europe, Lucca was in a position to developing itself economically becoming the capital city of silk industry and commerce. During the eleventh century the city became an independent Municipality and by the end of the fourteenth century, a Republic.
From 1400 Lucca was governed by Palo Guinigi and the family tower, Torre Guinigi is one of the most important symbols of the city, while his wife Ilaria del Carretto, is shown in the Dome Museum of San Martino, a beautiful masterpiece in Carrara marble made by Jacopo della Quercia. Lucca was again an independent Municipality until 1799 the arrival of Napoleon and from that time on, Elisa Baciocchi, sister of Napoleon became the Grand Duchess of Lucca. She reigned and lived with her husband Felice Bacocchi, in the Quarter of Parata, the same palace that it was some centuries before the residence of Palo Guinigi, gentleman of Lucca. Elisa Baciocchi determined to change Palazzo Parata in the style of "Versailles", making precious furnitures arrive from all over Europe. From 1814 to 1847 it was under the Borbone family domination and later it made part of the Granducato di Tuscana till 1860 when the city was joined to the Italian Kingdom.
