Belluno, whose name derives from the Celtic belo-dunum that means bright hill, is a beautiful locality that is located on a cape near the confluence of the Ardo torrent with the Piave river, in the heart of Valbelluna.
The city is inserted in a beautiful mountainous scenery which bewitches tourists: in the north it rises the Schiara dolomitic group while in the south the Pre Alps divide the Belluno district from the venitian plain. Always in the south there is the Nevegal, the “hill of bellunesi”, that offers in winter ski tracks and in summer many paths to make on foot or in mountain-bike, surrounded by green meadows and woods.

The center of Belluno has the signs of the long venetian domination and it is characterized by palaces of Renaissance age, splendid churches, ancient public squares with typical fountains, evocative porches. In the Dome public square there are the most important city buildings: the palace of Rettori of XV century, the neogotic red palace, nowaday headquarters of the municipality, and the Vescovado.
At the main points of the ancient city tourists can admire the two gates, the imposing Dojona in the north and Rugo in the south, near the sixteenth century church of Santa Maria dei Battuti.
Just outside the town-walls there is the public square of "dei Martiri" (or “Campedel”) that, with its long promenade rich of storees and coffee, is considered the center of Belluno society life.
 
The territory which surrounds Belluno is also interesting for its naturalistic beauties and it offers to the tourists many opportunities.
The Alpago plateau with its small villages rich of history and traditions; the wide Val Belluna, in a typical dolomitic scenery; the Cadore area, native land of the famous painter Tiziano.
In this area it is possible to spend relaxing days dipped in the nature and at the same time discover the important historical and artistic heritage of the province.
