Alessandria is set in the plain crossed by Tanaro and Bormida rivers that makes the area an ideal place for agricultural activities.
The landscape offer various natural suggestive scenaries, expecially in fall, the best period of the year for the traditional local fairs.
The city name Alessandria was in honor of Pope Alexander III and it occupies from the historical point of view, a strategic territory.
If you think to the alliances with the Lega Lombarda and Genoa, the noble families of Visconti, Sforza, Savoia and to Napoleone, whose name recalls the battle of Marengo.
Numerous architectonic works can be visited in Alessandria, thanks to its historical testimony, like the Citadel, Ghilini Palace, the Town Hall and Cuttica Palace, and from the religious point of view there are also the Cathedral and the Church of Saint Maria di Castello.
It is advised to visit also the exposure of the Museum of Sciences and Planetarium with birds, bugs and fossils and the Museum Etnografico Gambarina, said "there was once - c'era una volta", with objects going back to late 19th and early 20th C. belonging to the 'Casa del Lavoro' the house of the job.
