Hostels Viterbo

Viterbo is the capital of its province, set in the heart of Tuscia, a historic region of the norhern Lazio. The town lies at the foot of mountains Cimini, near the lakes of Vico and Bolsena. The main resources of this area are, apart tourism, agricolture and pottery. The old town still retains a typically medieval structure while the periphery is characterized by modern buildings. The upper part is still enclosed by an intact set of walls and still keeps many stone buildings that give it a very picturesque appearance.

The city was founded by the Etruscans but with the Roman conquest Viterbo acquired a certain importance. The moment of greatest glory is, however, the thirteenth century when, after many struggles for the control of this area, it became the seat of Popes. Since then the popes stayed there almost always and here were held many conclaves. In this period was built the Papal Palace, the most famous building of Viterbo, with the allusive loggia formed by seven arches supported by slender columns. In the center stands a magnificent fountain of '400.

Next to the palace lies the Cathedral, characterized by a beautiful Renaissance facade. The interior, which includes three aisles, houses precious works of art and the sarcophagus of Pope John XXI. Not far extends the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, preserved almost intact, with its towers, palaces and churches. A few kilometers from the town of Viterbo there are the Baths of the Popes, fueled by the source of thermal Bullicame, and the Etruscan necropolis of Castel d'Asso. Worth a visit also the village of Bagnaia, where there is the Basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia, a splendid Renaissance sanctuary.
