Motel Cosenza

Cosenza is an important economic and cultural center of Calabria. The city lies in the valley of Catri that is framed by beautiful hills and mountains. The town is divided by the river Busento into two parts. On the right stands the old part, at the foot of Mount Pancrazio, characterized by narrow streets with buildings up to the top of the hills. On the other side there is the modern part, recognizable for its urban design very orderly and low houses. The village is surrounded by the Catena Costiera meridionale, covered with green woods where lives the wolf, animal symbol of the city.

Cosenza's origins date back to the fourth century b.C. when it was an important strategic location for Bruzi, a local population. During the Greek and Roman period the city became a thriving economic center, as it was on the way aimed at Sicily. The apex of development was reached in the sixteenth century when the Academy was founded, which earned great fame to the city, so to be called the "Athens of Calabria". The heart of Cosenza is square Campanella, a real meeting point between old and new part. Here there is the church of San Domenico, with a lovely facade in Gothic style, and the adjacent convent that houses the beautiful cloister.

Continuing toward the old quarter we meet Corso Telesio, the main street of the city. Until a few years ago it was called the way of merchants for the many shops and workshops present. At the end of the street lies the Duomo, original of the twelfth century. The building was recently subjected to a restoration that allow to admire it in all its splendor. The front has three major portals and a beautiful central rose window. The interior retains an ancient Roman sarcophagus and the Tomb of Isabella of Aragon, who died in Cosenza in 1271. The last stop of the visit is the castle, that dominates the city from the hill Pancrazio. The structure was build by Saracen but has undergone several transformations in history. From here you can enjoy a unique view.
