Hostels Ravenna and Wonderland

Ravenna is the largest city of Romagna region and historically one of the most important in Italy. The province stretches on the "Romagnola" lowlands, near the Adriatic Sea, which is connected through the channel Candiano. In addition to its artistic beautys, the province of Ravenna offers a wide range of beautiful landscapes such as the country cultivated with fruit groves, lagoons and canals lined with traditional local fishing nets, the long sandy coastline protected by centuries-old pinewoods. All this things makes the city one of the major tourist destinations in Italy.

Ravenna has been for several centuries one of the protagonists in the history of Europe and the magificient monuments still visible testimony to its cultural and political role. The city was capital of three different kingdoms. In the fifth century the it heritage gathered of Rome at the end of the Western Roman Empire. Then it became the capital of the Goths during the reign of Theodoric and finally was the seat of Byzantine government in Italy for about two centuries. Nowaday eight monuments in Ravenna are included in the World Heritage list of Unesco and in the basilicas of the city is preserved the richest heritage of mosaics of the world.

An example is the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, erected by Theodoric for heathen worship and then consecrated to Christianity. The interior is richly decorated with colorful mosaics representing sacred scenes. The Basilica of San Vitale, built by the Byzantines, is one of the most important monuments of early Christian art for the beauty of its decorations. Next to the Cathedral lies the Neonian Baptistry, with the dome completely covered by a huge mosaic depicting the baptism of Jesus.

Leaving the city we meet the famous Mausoleum of Theodoric, where the king of Goths was buried in 526. The construction is entirely in white marble and inside houses the sarcophagus with the body of the king. To the south is, however, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, dedicated to the first bishop of Ravenna. This imposing structure is famous for its mosaics and sarcophagi of ancient archbishops who are prepared along the aisles. Also worth visiting the Tomb of Dante Alighieri, who spent here the last years of his life and died in 1321. Finally, for the youngest and not only there is the great theme park of Wonderland, which attracts two million visitors every year.
