Bagni di Lucca is a charming medioeval town famous for its Baths.
It rises along the shores of the Lima torrent that comes down from the Apennines, in a privileged position of great interest not only for its monuments but also for the vicinity to the numerous Tuscan art cities.
The origins of Bagni di Lucca Spas go back to past centuries when in Medieval times, it was named Bagni di Corsena but the properties of the thermal spring waters were already recognised in the Roman times.
Ugolino da Montecatini in his famous treatise, described the therapeutic powers of its spring waterss, which attracted the most important people of that time.
Bagni di Lucca, became one of the most famous spa towns in Europe under the power of Elisa Bonaparte and during the XIX century the town, already a popular destination during the Renaissance, experienced a boom as both a healing center and as a holiday resort.
Bagni di Lucca was one of the most fashionable destinations on the Grand Tour.
During the Belle Epoque and the early years of the XX century many illustrious people came to stay in Bagni di Lucca, such as Pascoli, Carducci, Alfieri, Montale, Dumas, Byron, Shelley, Puccini, Mascagni, and many others famous artists.
Nowadays, resident guests of the ever-popular thermal center can make use of two caves with natural steam and numerous springs of thermal water, used in the preparation of the many treatments and cures.
Bagni di Lucca has two thermal centers: Terme Jean Varraud and Casa Bocella, both specialising in the cure of arthro-rheumatic, broncho-pneumatic, Vascular and gynaecological pathologies.
Unique are the two natural steam caves, additional to the centers, where the temperature runs between 40 and 47 degree centigrades.
Grotta Paolina is the more charming one, first open in 2001 it is the smaller one and it features two caves, each one has its own spring at different temperatures.
Apart from these facilities, there is also the Centro Ouida, which uses the latest in thermal beauty treatments and targeted therapy programmes.
Its setting has something of a mountain resort in spite of Bagni di Lucca actual altitude, less than 152 metres (500 ft) above the sea leval.
The village has three major centers called: la Villa, Ponte a Serraglia and Fornoli.
Bagni di Lucca is surrounded by many other villages and hamlets and the whole area is rich in art and nature beauty.
