Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and it has always been the most important economic, cultural and political center of the region. The city is set right in the middle of the Angel's Gulf, a splendid natural arch that faces the sea of south Sardinia. The historic centre, with the typical medieval aspect, lies around the ancient Spanish castle, that rises on the hill overlooking the city. Since the nineteenth century the modern districts have developed in the area around the harbour, which is the main economic resource of Cagliari.
The city was founded by the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC, which chose this gulf as berthing for ships direct to the Iberian peninsula. Shortly Cagliari became one of the most important commercial centers of the Mediterranean. After the long Roman domination, which has left a legacy of several monuments, the city experienced a period of decline. In 1258 the Pisan republic conquered the region and gave Cagliari the present appearance, with the construction of the first fort. In the fourteenth century Aragonese took control of Sardinia and ended the Castle, which still dominates the city.
The main way of Cagliari is via Roma, a street full of elegant buildings, shops and cafes. From here you can reach in a short time the Cathedral dedicated to St. Mary, which was built by Pisa in the twelfth century in romanesque style. The interior, with three naves, conserves precious works of art such as the pulpit dating back to 1162. Opposite the church there is the bastion of Saint Remy on whose summit opens the terrace of Umberto I, from where you can admire the beautiful bay.
In the lower town there are the main remains of the Roman period. The amphitheatre, dating back to the second century d.C., retains most of the steps and underground. A little distance there are the ruins of the villa of Tigellio, a sardinian noble of the first century BC. In addition to numerous historical monuments the territory of Cagliari boasts a broad stretch of coast. The main beach of the city is the Poetto, which develops straight for about 8 km. In summer period this area is frequented particularly by young people because of many discos and clubs.
