Set on the leftside of Tanaro river, in the beautiful Monferrato hills, Asti is the capital of the smallest Piemontese province, famous for the production of its delicious wines, worldwide renown as the sparkling Spumante d'Asti or the sweet Moscato.
Vineyards cover great part of the Monferrato hills by Asti and during the year various manifestations tied to the wine and the good table are held, but also the visit to the city of Asti is interesting to admire its artistic and historical testimonies.
Asti is the birthplace of Vittorio Alfieri and the city will tell you its millenium history by the monuments: towers, churches, 18th century palaces, its old center with circular urbanisation as the the ancient "Comuni". To mention are the Roman Tower of San Secondo that it was part of the town-walls, Asti Cathedral that it is an interesting example of Piedmont Gotic style, the Alfieri and Bellino Palace that today accommodate the city museums.
The local gastronomy proposes many typical plates that are referred to the specialties of valuable truffles, mushrooms, vegetables and fruits as hazelnuts, the 'nocciole' mailny used to produce 'torrone' and 'gianduia', that is nougat and a soft nut chocolate.
Very much renommed is 'tartufo bianco' the white truflle which it is found in the Monferrato hills, then there are the typical regional delicacies to mention as 'bagna cauda' or 'agnolotti' or braised beef in Barolo wine, the Asti 'fritto misto' and many famous DOC red wines as Barbera d'Asti or Barbera del Monferrato, Dolcetto, Freisa and Grignolino d'Asti.
Several shows take place in town, to mention are the Palio di Asti on the third Sunday of September, the Festival delle Sagre on the first Sunday of September, the Douja d'Or a prestigious wine display that is a ten days show in September, and the Festa del Tartufo in December.
