It was so called from the Greek word that means elbow bent reffered to its position made by mount Conero and extended to the coast.
It was founded by the Syracuse Greeks and had itys spledors during King Traiano' reign.
The old histroic and monumental center is set on the Guasco hill and on top of it was one the Greek Acropolis in the place of the todays S.Ciriaco Cathedral.
The modern part of the city is by the valley and was built during the end of the 8th century.
Its Port is among the principals on the Adriatic and the shores are sometime rocky, sand or stoned.
