1 Apartment Rentals a Noto, Italy
Noto is a beautiful city in the province of Siracusa, on the southeast coast of Sicily. The municipality, one of the largest in Italy, extends from the Iblei mountains to the Gulf with the same name. The surrounding area is mostly mountainous or hilly, with plateaus gently that slop towards the sea, giving rise to beaches, natural harbors and charming bays. The town is inserted in the World Heritage List as a Patrimony of Humanity for its historical center that keeps an urban structure innovative and exceptional for its architectural quality.
Noto has prehistoric origins but once stood on the Alveria plateau, where, over the centuries, have followed numerous civilizations. In 1693 a catastrophic earthquake completely destroyed the village, which was rebuilt closer to the sea. The center of the town is now a clear example of the eighteenth century architecture, and Noto is considered the baroque city par excellence. The palaces and churches are all magnificent and richly decorated and they were designed by the greatest architects of that period.
The main street is Corso Vittorio Emanuele throughout the entire center and on which three large squares open. In one of these there is the scenic staircase leading to the cathedral, certainly the most famous monument of Noto. The church has a large baroque facade crowned by magnificent statues and is bounded by two bell-towers. The interior consists of three naves and strikes for its brightness and simplicity, which contrasts strongly with the outside. Opposite stands the Palazzo Ducesio, surrounded by a large porch, that nowaday is home to the City Hall. In addition to the monuments is pleasant walk in the narrow alleys of the center where we can experience the most authentic soul of the city.
