The characteristic city of Alberobello is located in the heart of the Murge Region, a large plateau in the center of Apulia, dipped in olive groves
and vineyards, renown for being quite entirely constituted of "trulli" the ancient houses that rise on a cylindrical or cubical base, with the typical cone shaped roof cover formed of limestone rings.

Alberobello rises on two hilltops: on the oriental part it raises the new modern city while the ancient vilage with "trulli" is set on the other top of the hill, split in two zones called Monti and Aia Piccola. The monumental historical center of Alberobello is an extraordinary example of the spontaneous popular city architecture and it features approximately 1.500 "trulli". These house are still in use and "trulli" are considered part of national artistic patrimony, for their so singular beauty, obtaining the Unesco acknowledgment as a "Patrimony of the Humanity. Beyond to the characteristic quadrangular shape and the conical roof composed by limestone "chiancarelle" that have been assembled to dry, they are stoned buildings that can be found in this geographic area, very much similar to the Greek 'tholos'  from which they seem to share the name (torullos, in Greek stands for cupola). The name 'trullo', however is referred to the single conical roof, while the entire construction takes the name of "casedde" that means mall houses.

The origins of Alberobello go back to the second half of the XVI century, a small feud under the dominion of the Acquaviva Counts, that it began to increase with farmers who turned the forest into a fertile land, later on they were authorized to build up the typical "trulli". In1797 the inhabitants asked the aid of king Ferdinand IV di Borbone who rendered it a free country by law.
