Villasimius is the most important seaside resort of the south-east coast of Sardinia. The town is set on the promontory of Capo Carbonara, a small peninsula that marks the eastern border of the Gulf of Cagliari. At the heart of the promontory lies the pond of Notteri, separated by sea from the beach. Its famous beaches ranges amid sequences of creeks, natural gulfs, uncontaminated cliffs, small delicious bays make Villasimius a very popular tourist destination. The villagge is also at the centre of a wide archaeological area, amid nuraghi, Phoenician and Roman ruins of great historical interest.
This area was inhabited since ancient times because of its strategic geographic position, as evidenced by the findings of ancient settlements. During the Middle Ages, the area was completely abandoned for the frequent raids of pirates. The current center was founded in 1882 but for a long time it was a simple village of a few people dedicated to agriculture and pastoralism. Starting in the '50s the discovery and exploitation of the incredible natural beauty of this area made Villasimius a well-equipped tourist resort.
This stretch of coast offers a number of small treasures to be discovered. From the tip of Cape Carbonara we can enjoy an evocative view of the surrounding area and the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara. From here you can admire, among other things, the long sandy beach of Simius. The stretch of sea between the two islands has been the scene of numerous shipwrecks in history. These hidden treasures are now visible thanks to boat with transparent bottom that during the summer leave from Porto Giunco. The loads of ships sunk in these waters and Roman artefacts found in the area are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Villasimius.
