Recanati is a charming town of Marche region, known throughout the world for being the birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi. The village is set on the top of a hill between the valleys of Musone and Potenza, in a panoramic position from which you can see all the surrounding territory. A few kilometres to the east is the Adriatic Sea, to the north stands the promontory of Monte Conero and in the distance, the peaks of the Apennines. Around the town there is a dense network of roads in a continuous up and down through the rolling hills covered with olive trees and vineyards.

The origins of Recanati are very old but the city began to have some importance only during the Middle Ages. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth century, the town experienced a period of splendour, to become one of the main trade centres of the Adriatic sea. A witness to the wealth achieved by its merchants, nowaday in the old town there are beautiful palaces and important works of art inside churches and museums. The Civic Art Gallery houses some masterpieces of the famous Mannerist painter Lorenzo Lotto, whose works are on display in museums throughout the world.

But in Recanati everything seems linked to the memory of Giacomo Leopardi, as shown by the plates with its famous verses affixed on some buildings downtown. Nowaday it is possible to visit Palazzo Leopardi, birthplace of the poet, with its magnificent library that preserves precious volumes. Walking through the villagge you can also find places of famous poems as the hill of "Infinito", the square of "Sabato del Villaggio" and the house of Silvia. Recanati is also known for the tenor Beniamino Gigli, born here in 1890. In honour of him the city has dedicated a museum located inside the Municipal Palace.
