Alghero is a beautiful town that overlooks the north-western coast of Sardinia. The old town is set on a promontory and is still surrounded by walls. The modern part, which was developed starting in '900, lies on the plain of Nurra. The economy of the area is mainly based on seaside tourism, thanks to its gorgeous sea, and on the manufacture of coral. In fact, this stretch of coastline is known throughout the world as Coral Riviera, because it's rich of this valuable material.
The city was founded in the twelfth century by the Genoese, that gave it the name of Alghero because of the large amount of algae deposited on the coast by the sea. In 1384 the fortress was conquered by the Aragonese and many settlers coming here from Spain. Since then Alghero is nicknamed the little Barcelona, and the city still retains significant traces in architecture, language and traditions of the long Spanish domination. Unfortunately, during World War II the city center was bombed, but it remains a small jewel.
The city still preserves intact the mighty walls interspersed with seven towers for the sighting of enemy ships. Also worth visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built in the sixteenth century in Gothic-Catalan style. But the real tourist attraction of Alghero is represented by its long coastline characterized by a landscape of extraordinary beauty. In its 80 km alternate fine sandy beaches and rocky promontories, such as the famous Cape Caccia, which offers a magnificent panorama. The Beach of Bombarde, with white sand, is the most popular, but the coast offers a large number of small bays and inlets. This area is also much appreciated by divers for the wealth of colourful fishes and vegetation.
