Among the castles built up by Frederic II of Svevia in Apulia, there is the beatiful Castel del Monte, a charming and original castle with the shape of the Sveva crown. The octagonal size of the castle, symbol of Apulia, dominates one of the higher hills in Western Murgia, south of Andria. The castle was constructed around 1240 by local architects, not as a fortress but a dwelling. The structure in fact has no defense works like a ditch, bridge and underground exits, furthermore the rooms are wide and enriched to testify the residencial nature of the castle. In 1876 it was acquired and refurbished by the Italian State, in that time the castle was reduced little more than a rune situated in a strategic point, at approximately 17 km from Andria, from where a truly wonderful panorama can be admired.
