Hotels Lipari

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian archipelago, set in the Tyrrhenian Sea at nearly 80 km from the coast of Sicily. Together with Stromboli is the only volcano still active. According to tradition, the island owes its name to the first sovereign, the greek King Liparo, who settled here in 580 b.C. After the Roman domination followed, as testify some findings of buildings destroyed by the eruption in the 700. But the most important period was the Norman age, which has bequeathed the main historical monuments of the island.

The symbol of Lipari is the Castle, which is located on the promontory overlooking the island. It was built by the Normans to defend themselves by frequent raids of pirates. Inside the walls lies the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew original of 1084, but that was repeatedly destroyed and restructured. The only part that still maintains its original aspect is the cloister. The castle is also home of the Museum Eoliano, one of the richest and most interesting of all Sicily. In its rooms we can admire the Aeolian exhibits ranging from prehistory to the classic age.

But Lipari is mainly a beach resort, thanks to its beautiful sea and its evocative scenery. The most popular beaches are located near Canneto, a small fishing village with a beautiful sandy coastline. The island offers the opportunity to make also pleasant excursion on foot or by mountain-bike. The most fascinating hike is the one that leads to the fraction of Quattrocchi, set on a hill from where we can admire the magnificent landscape and the characteristic faraglioni rocks. Finally, in the locality of San Calogero there is a renowned spa, which was also used by the ancient Romans.
