Reggio Calabria is the regional capital and the largest trade center. The town is set in a magnificent location overlooking the east coast of the Strait of Messina, dominated by the mountain chain of Aspromonte. The climate of the area is very mild throughout the year, with long summers characterized by a pleasant breeze. Thanks to its beautiful landscapes, its long beaches and the remarkable artistic heritage, tourism is the primary source of wealth for the city. In the surrounding territory is particularly developed the cultivation of citrus fruits, including the famous bergamot.
Reggio Calabria is one of the oldest colonies of Magna Greece, which was considered very important at the strategic level as required for passage routes between the Tyrrhenian Sea and east. During the Roman period, the city became a thriving commercial port and on the coast were built luxurious villas, palaces and spa, still visible today. Unfortunately, the old town retains very little evidence of its rich past as a result of several earthquakes that have hit this area in history.
Nowaday in Reggio Calabria we can admire liberty style buildings, wide boulevards and large squares, in addition to a beautiful sea front characterized by flowerbeds, palms and exotic plants. Corso Garibaldi is the main street of the city, with many shops, clubs and restaurants. Here there is the Duomo, with its characteristic facade in Romanesque and Gothic style. The interior is divided into three naves, with many decorations and beautiful windows. The previous cathedral, destroyed by an earthquake in 1908, remains the only chapel of the Santo Sacramento, with the walls covered by colored marbles.
Nearby lies the Castello, original of thousand and rebuilt in the fifteenth century by Aragoneses. Nowaday remain only two towers and a section of wall, surrounded by a beautiful park. It's worthing visiting the National Archaeological Museum, which preserves precious artefacts from all over Calabria. The main attraction are without doubt the Bronzi di Riace, two magnificent statues dragged out of the sea in 1972, nera the village of Riace. Reggio Calabria has also recently become a popular beach resort, equipped with modern lidos, both on the Ionian that and on Tyrrhenian coast.
