San Giovanni Valdarno is located hakfway between Florence and Arezzo and it is fawell known for being the birthplace of Masaccio, one of the most important painters of the Renaissance.
The municipality and local resident keep the house with care and love, easy to find being set along the town high street, where many exibitions and shows are yearly held to celbrate their famous painter.
San Giovanni Valdarno also features the splendid Palazzo d'Arnolfo, better known as Palazzo Pretorio, which rises between the two main towers of the town center and it presently hosts the Town Hall. This ancient palace dates back to the thirteenth century but during the XV century the building has been heavily modified, thought maintaining its medieval architecture.
You can admire a pretty "portico" on the ground floor of the outer perimeter, surrounding the Palazzo. It shows magnificent arches with many insignias and coats of arms made of stone or terracotta, including a Florence Lily and a Guelph eagle.
On the upper floor, two Renaissance lodges overlook the square and in the center of the Palace building lies a charming crenelated tower. Palazzo Petrorio hosts nowadays various San Giovanni Valdarno exhibitions and a visit must be previously arranged contacting the Major's office.
