Sulmona is located at the confluence of the rivers Gizio and Vella, in a large valley dipped in the scenary of the Abruzzo and Maiella National Parks.
This area is one of the incoming gates to reach the best natural places in Abruzzo and in Sulmona historical center one can still breath the atmosphere of a beautiful Roman town, rich of valuable architectures and of every suggestion.
In the ancient powerful town walls in the center is set Porta Napoli (Naples gate), an arc with its wonderful stones worked and the sign of its original coat of arms, that it is surmounted by a wide window and furthermore the terrace ruins of Ercole Curino Sanctuary.
A mirabile fragment of the twelfth century arched Swabian aqueduct and the Renaissance Fontana del Vecchio, a fountain set on one side of Garibaldi square, around which splendid churches arise, the baroque one of Santa Chiara and the other one of San Filippo.
In the city there are other signs of Sulmona Middle Ages, such as the Cathedral of San Panfilo, the facade of Santa Maria della Tomba, Tabassi Palace and a few kilometers away, the frescoes at Eremo di San Onofrio set on the slopes of the Morrone mount, the Celestiniana Abbey and in the architectonic complex of the church and the palace Annunziata that hosts inside the Civic Museum.
