Pragelato is the ancient main town in the valley of Val Chisone and it has become nowadays a great winter tourist resort, set just at a short distance from the Via Lattea, perfectly equipped for downhill and cross-country skiing, ice-skating and summer trekking.
Pragelato boasts 50 kilometres of well-tended snow-covered pistes with panoramic views of incomparable beauty, for beginners and expert skiers alike. Because of its unusual conformation of the slopes, there are also opportunities to do ski alpinism in fresh snow, with marvellous off-piste excursions in spring and links to Sestriere.
It combines tourist development with environmental conservation, such as it can be seen from the superb examples of traditional Occitan architecture in the charming Val Troncea nature park, where the main features of the scenery are green valleys, great mountains and extraordinarily rich flora and fauna, as well as interesting traces of the crafts of times gone by, such as mining in the Bet mines. Its name, Pradzalā (iced fields) derives from the harshness of the climate in the winter months.
Pragelato has some corners of perfectly preserved beauty, with the many sundials created by the itinerant artist Zarbula, a painting by Gabriele Dufur in Ruā, the main town, and many polygonal fountains bearing the symbol of the fleur-de-lys, the French coat of arms.
In the village center a wide basin dominated on the right the opening to the Val Troncea and th woody massif of the Albergian, on the left the forests that go up towards the Assietta. Pragelato offers its visitors the most genuine products of high quality alpine agriculture, such as honey and preserves, along with famous herbal liqueurs like Genepy. The Ethnographic Museum of Alpine Peoples is also very interesting to visit.
Pragelato Municipality is made up of several larger and smaller hamlets that are mostly located on the valley's left side and strewn on a wide sunny basin, at the foot of Mount Albergian, on the shores of Fraiteve, Assietta and Troncea torrents.
Its ancient name, Prata Gelata, clearly derives from its rather rigid climate, where ice covers the meadows for several months during the winter. Alpine pastures, lakes high up in the mountains, rock faces, woods and marshy areas with the typical bird life found in wetlands: there are many faces of nature in the area which includes a nature park and various other protected areas.
