Ponza is the most renown and largest resort of the Pontine islands, set 33 km south of Capo Circeo, in the province of Latina.
Many ferry companies link the island during the beautiful season, leaving from the port of Gaeta (59 km south-west) or frrom Terracina, Naples and Fiumicino.

Ponza was renown since the Roman time where the empire political opponents where relegated to exile, as Agrippina but also other sources testify the exile of Nerone.
Furthermore wide testimonies exist stating that the isle of Ponza was already inhabitated dating back to the first centuries before Jesus Crist.
The archaeological diggings carried out during the last century have brought back in light the rests of roman villas, aqueducts and water tanks.
Foundings of many hipogeous areas reveal the presence of a necropolis datable to the first centuries after Jesus Christ.
Ponza has been ever since considered as part of Campania sister islands and it seems in fact that its name drifts to the fact of being situated off shore in full sea, like the farther earth olong the Neapolitan coasts.
Although that the Pontine islands belong in our days to the Province of Latina, its origins, speech and local traditions confirm the tie with Neapolitan culture and not Latium.
An expample is the resort name of 'chiaia' a typically Neapolitan term indicating beach, which is commonly used on the isle.
