Portoferraio is the main town and landing place on the Island of Elba, a small city rich in history and situated on a cliff spur that dominates the natural port, already known since the Etruscan and Roman age.
Arriving with the ship to Portoferraio you will admire the imposing Medicea Fortress set on top of the bay, to defense of the port, one of most active in Italy, where every day numerous tourists disembark in search of an unforgettable vacation.
The historical center of Portoferraio is situated behind the port, between the piazza Cavour and piazza della Repubblica public squares, and in the part that leads to the Falcone and della Stella Fortresses, to the Linguella Tower and to city walls of the Medici's fortifications.
Portoferraio offers religious treasures of rare beauty, like the Church of the Saintest Sacramento and the Church of the Misericordia while the Palazzina dei Mulini and the theatre of Vigilanti testify the presence and the public life of Napoleon on the island and outside from the town is set Villa San Martino, its private country residence.
Worth a visit are also the city Town Hall Palazzo Comunale, the Pinacota Foresiana, and on the western part of Portoferraio there are attractive white gravel beaches with beautiful limpid sea waters.
In the outskirtses of Portoferraio are set several beautiful beaches like in La Biodola, Capo Bianco, the beach of Ghiaie, the Cala dei Frati's Cove and more.
On the road that leads to Cavo you reach up the Terme di San Giovanni and beyond there are the rests of the roman Villa delle Grotte from which you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over the gulf of Portoferraio.
Scattered in the area there are many resorts with hotel, lodge, bed & breakfast, residence, farm holidays in a position to satisfying any requirement but is inly in town that these accommodation activities remain opened all the year long, being Portoferraio the office center with shops, public services and the main port of the Elba Island.
