The city of Novi Ligure is situated south of Alessandria between the slopes of the Ligurian Apennines and the Scrivia Valley, in the so called zone of Oltregiogo, a mostly hilly territory characterized by winding roads that cross vineyards, forests and fields. Important communication junction between the Po plain and Genoa, Novi Ligure belonged in the past, to the Bishops of Tortona, it was later a free common and it passed under the dominion of the Visconti family of Milan. From the 1447 the city was submitted to Genoa and it became a strategic center for the passage of goods directed in the Po plain. Industrial town it is rich in seventeenth century monuments and the historical center of Novi Ligure has many buildings with painted facade. as the Palazzo Neuroni and the Durazzo Palace and it conserves a short part of the city walls, the tower of the castle, the church of teh Maddalena and teh Pieve of Santa Maria. Most recently the Museum dei Campionissimi has been opened in town, dedicated to the history of the bicycle, the competition cycling and the two city champions Coppi and Girardengo.
