Serravalle Scrivia is an important connection point set between the Po plain and the Ligurian sea. An industrial center situated between Piedmont and Liguria region, at the limit of the hills in the province of Alessandria. Important roman city, Serravalle Scrivia finds its roots in the city of Libarna that rose in the II century b.C. on the Postumia road, at the confluence between the Borbera torrent and the Scrivia river. With the barbaric invasions the city decayed and in the V century a.C. it was reduced to a village. In the X century a defense castle was built up to protect the small feudal territories, which passed under the dominion of the Spinola and the Visconti families and under the bishop of Tortona. It made part of the Duky of Milan and later on it passed to the Austrians. In 1738 it entered to make part of the Savoia family territory. It was then occupied by French-Spaniard and during the Napoleon wars it was annexed to the Republic of Genoa. The French, had it in possession after the Marengo battle and demolished the castle. In 1815 it returned to the Savoia Reign until the Unit of Italy.
The archaeological area of Libarna conserves the ruines of the amphitheater, the theatre and some Roman houses. In the new multifunctional center of Villa Caffarena it is possible to visit an archaeological exposure of the Roman city foundings. The most important monument in Serravalle Scrivia is the Collegiata of the SS. Martino and Stefano and a vist to the many local wineries it is advised, to taste Cortese di Gavi, the famous white local wine.
In the outskirtses there is the Val Borbera, a wide territory with churches, castles, fascinating water mills and villages. The valley begins from the plain of Vignole and Borghetto and it is encircled by evocative mountains where the view spaces up to the sea. Silent valleys covered by limpid waters streams with sliding amid the incontaminati forests where roes, deers, wild boars, foxes and pheasants live. Borghetto Borbera is a renowned holiday center in the Val Borbera with many attractions and the ideal position allows an easy access to the tops of surrounding mountains, pleasant walks in the green and to the grips of the Borbera torrent. In the outskirtses small villages with historical characteristics are set and it is worth to spend a day in this valley offering nature combined with good food delicacies.
