From a military document of the ninth century shows that when the Arabs arrived in Sicily at Trabia existed a small village. The current name derives from the arabian "at tarběah" which means "square" for its urban structure quadrangular. This area was very rich thanks to the production of paste that was traded across the Mediterranean. The architectural symbol of the city is certainly the old fortress, which has undergone over the centuries various restructuring. Since the sixteenth century the structure is owned by the family of Lanza, who ruled the city for a long time.
The castle of Trabia has an imposing walls square, a central tower in the center of the courtyard and two cylindrical towers once fitted artillery. The walls are accompanied by a series of architectural elements that were used as decoration and they have large terraces from which we can admire the magnificent Gulf of Termini. Nearby lies the tunny-fishing ground of San Nichola, that exists from the fourteenth century. Nowaday we can visit it and assist the traditional fishing for tuna.
