Manfredonia is a beautiful town in the province of Foggia, set in the northern part of Apulia region. It overlooks the Adriatic Sea at the centre of the homonymous gulf, in the renowned Gargano peninsula. The town has a port well equipped, among the most active in South Italy. Apart from the port activities, the economy of the area is based on tourism, thanks to the extraordinary natural beauty of the landscape. Moreover Manfredonia boasts a beautiful old town, full of monuments and churches that testify to its importance especially in the medieval period.
The city was founded in 1256 by King Manfredi, who moved the population of nearby Siponto, destroyed by an earthquake in 1223. The old town still has the original structure planning to board, which stands around the castle. This imposing building was used as a prison for a long time and now houses the National Archaeological Museum. The town, much sought after because of its geographical position, suffered numerous attacks, as in 1620, when it was put to fire and iron by the Turks. Many buildings and churches were destroyed and later were rebuilt in Baroque style.
The cathedral, built on the ruins of a Gothic church, is a significant example of the Baroque style. Inside are preserved interesting works of art, in particular statues and wooden crucifixes. The city also boasts splendid noble palaces, which testify to his wealth in the course of history. For those who love the sea Manfredonia has a beautiful coastline, that is sandy in the south while in the north is high and rocky. Very interesting is also the country inland, with many "Masserie", the typical farms of Puglia, where you can buy the extraordinary food products and local handicrafts.
