Mattinata is a small town in the province of Foggia which overlooks the Adriatic Sea. The village lies in the valley of Carbonara and it's immersed in a landscape of exceptional beauty among olive trees and large woods. The town is part of Gargano National Park, one of the largest protected areas of Italy. The origins of Mattinata are very ancient. The findings coming from necropolis located on Mount Saraceno and the area around the port testify to the presence of a settlement during the Bronze Age. In Roman times the village had a great importance, since the port started ships charges of its precious oil. After a period of complete abandonment, because of a violent earthquake, Mattinata returned to be populated only in the seventeenth century. The old town still retains its original appearance, with narrow streets and stone stairways leading to the sea, that is always in the background.
The main attraction of Mattinata is certainly its beautiful coastline, characterized by the white beautiful cliffs that are in the magnificient bay of Zagare. The coast also offers numerous sea caves, which are often accessible only by small boats, which can be hired at the port city. Thanks to the crystal clear sea and the rich depths, this area is much frequented by scuba diving enthusiasts. During the summer there are also diving with the accompaniment of qualified instructors.
